M.A.C. Attack

5 Mar

I love a customer who knows what she wants! This was a very fun order to fill using only gold, purple, and black with the M.A.C. theme! The flavors of these fashion-forward themed confections were Red Velvet and Death by Chocolate!

I Spy

6 Jan

What can be more fun than a Spy-Themed birthday? As much fun as it is coming up with various components, keeping in mind that this is a child’s birthday party, I decided weapons of any kind were inappropriate and unnecessary. This very lucky birthday boy, got two cakes for his special day! His mother ordered Death by Chocolate and Red Velvet with cream cheese frosting. The ONLY trace of fondant on these cakes was the “Top Secret” label on top of the Red Velvet cake. Everything else was done in frosting and hand piped. I love a challenge!

GUCCI Handbag in the Tropics

13 Aug

Not every cake goes off smoothly. Sometimes the weather works against me when I’m handling fondant and sometimes disasters happen en route to the location.¬† Such was the case with this cake. It was one of the hottest days of the summer and the fondant was tearing and ripping. When I finally had the cake loaded and on its way to the venue, some jackass driver stopped short in front of me, causing the cake to slide forward, the bag to topple over, and all the layers on the “box” to shift, tearing the fondant. The delicate tropical flowers I spent hours sculpting the night before were either smashed or cracked. It took¬† me nearly 3 hours to fix all the damage one hard brake caused, but my customer was incredibly understanding and patiently shifted around the party itinerary until I arrived.

The cakes are all red velvet and filled with cream cheese frosting. The box is made of chocolate fondant. The flowers are gumpaste. The bag is covered in fondant and gumpaste, and each of the GUCCI symbols are hand-painted with edible color gel. The “sand” is brown sugar.

“He’s Leeeeaaaving on a Jet Plane…”

26 Jun

Not all my cakes have to be some carved, fondant-enrobed, gravity-defying sculpture. Sometimes the simplest designs are the best. This is an airplane-themed 8″ cake I designed for a 6-year-old who was getting ready to jet off to Cebu for vacation. The cake is covered in frosting, and the only trace of fondant on it is the airplane silhouette. Everything else is frosting, except for the candy stars along the top.

The cake is made of rich layers of red velvet and chocolate cake with a light ganache filling. It’s covered in cream cheese frosting, and decorated with vanilla and chocolate icing.

The Backyardigans

20 May

This is the first of its kind from my kitchen. Move over Yo Gabba Gabba, here come The Backyardigans!

The cake underneath is vanilla and red velvet. It’s covered in fondant and all the deco is done in fondant, as well. My personal favorite component of this cake is the wooden fence. It was a lot of fun creating this confection!

For some strange reason, I notice that a lot of my character sculpts look like beanie babies. My customers seem to like them and they do look really cute. Does anyone else notice that?

Cake Cups

14 Mar

Who says cake need only be served in cupcake form or layered between frosting? These are some cake cups I made for my office’s holiday party. I wanted to bring something new to the table.

The red and white combination is red velvet cake with orange zest infused vanilla pastry cream. There is a shot of Grand Marnier at the bottom, which is soaked up nicely by the red velvet cake.

The chocolate combination is espresso chocolate cake and Kahlua mousse. There is a mixed shot of Godiva dark chocolate liquor and Kahlua soaked into the cake.

Cake Pops: Hello Kitty

24 Jan

A special order a little out of my norm, but still enjoyable- as always!

Inside is red velvet cake, cream cheese frosting and a nice shot of Frangelico. It’s coated in pink candy coating and decorated with sugar hearts, a red hot, and painted with food color.
